Condolences, Rest in Peace John R. Rodriguez

To All Members:

It is with deep regret that we have learned of the Wednesday passing of our former Mayor and friend John R. Rodriguez.

Mayor Rodriguez had a life-long interest in politics, and was ardent and active Federally as the New Democratic Party Member for the Nickel Belt Riding, winning elections in 1972, 1974, 1979, 1984 and 1988. He was a tireless advocate for Sudbury and Northern Ontario, and was a true friend and ally to Labour. John was also the Mayor of the Greater City of Sudbury from 2006 to 2010. In fact, Mayor Rodriguez was instrumental in the creation of the “Year of the Employee” benefits program, which still continues today.

There is so much more that can be said of John and his accomplishments, suffice to say he had a strong and positive impact on our City that endures to this day.

There will be visitation at the Lougheed Funeral Home at 252 Regent Street on Monday July 10 th from 2-5 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral will take place on Tuesday July 11 th at 10:00 am at St. Patrick’s Church at 39 Walford Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. David School “John Rodriguez Bursary Fund” are welcomed and encouraged.

On behalf of the Membership of CUPE Local 4705 and CUPE Members all across Northern Ontario Our most sincere condolences go out to John’s wife Bertilla and his children and grandchildren.

Out of respect for the work and friendship of John, the Canadian flag at the Union Hall will be flown at half-mast until John’s service on Tuesday.
Rest in Peace Sir, we all thank you for your work and friendship, and your legacy shall live on.

In Solidarity,

Darryl Taylor
