Families in all sectors across Ontario need child care. With the economic downturn, it is going to take many voices to convince the Ontario government that investment in child care and early childhood education is critical in the next provincial budget.
We need al CUPE members, parents and employers to send a message now to the McGuinty government. And you can do that simply by logging on to WaitingforChildcare.ca, a new website set up by the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care (OCBCC).
Increased funding leads to better wages!
Imagine if child care cost only $7 a day like it does in Quebec. This would benefit many CUPE member families as well as other families in our communities.
There’s another reason why it pays for CUPE members to lobby MMPs. Since Quebec introduced $7 a day daycare, salaries of early childhood educators have risen by 40 percent in that province! In Manitoba, where parents pay $27 a day, the government has committed to raising salaries and benefits by 30 percent over five years.
Right now, the Ontario government has NO plan, It’s time to change the approach to child care at Queen’s Park. In the next two months, the OCCC and CUPE Ontario will make deputations at the pre=budget consultations. We will also be holding high profile media events to advocate for CUPE jobs, wages and the right of parents to have universal affordable child care. But we can’t do it without you.
The Coalition has sent a letter to it’s members, including employers, requesting that postcards be widely distributed.
Act now - it’s yours and our children’s future
Here’s what you can do to put the pressure on the Ontario Government:
